Catch Report Open Weekend

Opening Weekend Fly Fishing Report – Ladybower Fisheries

Season Total stocking to date: 4,700

Well what a start! A gloomy morning greeted us on Saturday but the mood around the car park and jetty certainly didn't match the weather. Anglers started arriving early, full of anticipation and excitement for the new season ahead, spirits were high and it was certainly great to greet all you guys back on to our fantastic water - up the Bower.

The weather eventually cleared up and we seemed to have it from all seasons across the weekend but the fishing didn't disappoint at all. Right from the off fish were caught it plenty of places but the early boats seemed to have twigged on to where the fish were stocked up the Derwent arm.

Grainfoot being the hottest of hot spots early on with fishery manager, Warren and Matt Nuttall dropping straight on them. 25 by 11am was a decent start to the season noting that fish were holding tight to the bank on the ledge. Tactics they deployed were di5/di7's and boobies.

Coming out slightly later were the England Youth team that had chosen Ladybower for their annual weekend get together. They found fish as far up as Millbrook and had a great weekend by all accounts.

Travelling from across the border were Scottish pair James Lister and Kenny Whitehead. These guys certainly know how to put a bag together and over their 3 days on the water, easily caught over 100 fish! Chatting to the guys this morning they also highlighted the amount of big fish they had netted. Around a dozen 5lb+ with at least 3 doubles, biggest going 16lb. Simply incredible.

Most boats reporting in to double figures setting up for a fantastic rod average which will follow after a full weeks data has been gathered.

Tactics across the weekend - A variety of methods have worked but the usual early season combo of sinking lines and lures seem to be the stand out. Fast glass, Di3/5/7 have all accounted for good numbers. That said the bung is certainly worth a go in the calmer water, set 3-5ft, teamed with eggs, blobs or worms.
